The early beginnings of the Catholic Church in Espanola started on leased land on Sheppard Street as the Sacred Heart Parish that was built between 1903 and 1907. The Church soon became too small for all attending services and the need for a larger worship space seemed inevitable. In 1919 the construction of the New Basement Church and Rectory began on 313 Mead Boulevard which had a seating capacity of six hundred. The newly relocated Sacred Heart Parish opened on October 5, 1919 as a combined bilingual Catholic Parish. Once a month, the Basement Church would also host worship Services with the Ukrainian rite.
Sometimes between 1934 and 1937, the Basement Church surrended its name of Sacred Heart Parish as the same name was previously dedicated to another Catholic Church in our diocese. The Basement Church acquired a new name - Parish of the Good Shepherd.
For 28 years, parishioners of the combined bilingual parish shared the same building (Basement Church) however in 1947 a decision was made to erect separate dwellings for both French and English speaking parishioners. The combined bilingual Parish therefore spearated in 1947: Good Shepherd as separate English speaking Parish and Paroisse St-Louis de France as the French speaking Parish.
Both Parishes shared the same home for a while. On Easter day, April 17, 1949 the Parish of Good Shepherd was dedicated in its new home on 247 Mead Blvd. Paroisse St-Louis de France proceeded in 1958-59 to build a main floor on the Church foundation which had been previously used for the last 40 years as a bilingual worship space. Both Catholic Catholic communities flourished as close neighbours on Mead Blvd.
Forty-six years later, changes in demographics in Espanola occured and religious practices were declining, and both communities were struggling for the upkeep of buildings. Under the leadership of Rev. Terrence Fournier, pastor at that time, in consultation with parishiners and the diocese, a fesibility study was engage. The decision to close both Churches in order to give birth to Paroisse Saint-Jude Parish, a bilingual Church at 247 Mead Blvd. (old Good-Shepherd site) was necessary & inevitable.
With countless hours of volunteer help and with God's guidance, the dedication of the new parish took place on October 22, 2006, which marked the beginning of our present worship space.
